Info for mentee - In English

As a mentee, you will be matched with a volunteer career mentor, who will spend about two hours every month helping you with your job application process or career planning. Please advise that we don't match anyone up directly. All of our mentees come through organisations and jobcenters that we work with.

By using their knowledge, experience and professional network, the mentors can help you on your way into the Danish labour market or into the educational system.

It is free of charge to get a mentor, if your municipality provides you with a spot in the program, but you will have to play an active role in the relationship with your mentor. If you and your mentor work on your job applications, you will have to be open about your career ambitions, wishes and dreams and also your challenges. You will also have to be motivated and work continually on your applications. The mentors cannot find jobs for you, but can help you in the application process.

Who are the mentors?

The mentors are employees at different companies in the Copenhagen area from a variety of professional backgrounds who volunteer as mentors. They are a part of Foreningen Nydansker’s mentor corps and have participated in training at Foreningen Nydansker.

What can the mentors help me with?

  • Answering questions about the job application process, specific industries and educations
  • Guide you in writing good applications and a good resume
  • Information about what it is like to work at a Danish company
  • Inspiration with regard to career and education
  • Information about norms and unwritten rules when applying for jobs in Denmark
  • Inspiration with regard to using and expanding your professional network
  • Sharing own experiences

“Before I got a mentor I had no idea about how I could get a job in Denmark. Now I have a good understanding of my possibilities”.

Whom will I be matched with?

We match mentors and mentees on the basis of many different criteria. Professional background will, of course, play an important part, but we also cater for your specific needs taking into account the mentor’s particular strengths.

How much time will I spend?

A mentorship often lasts 4 - 6 months. You will probably meet your mentor at his or her work place for about an hour every other week. Together you will make a plan for your mentorship and agree upon where and when you will meet and how you will communicate in between meetings.

Who can get a mentor?

In order to get a career mentor from Foreningen Nydansker you have to be new in Denmark or have a foreign background. You have to be unemployed.
We cooperate with different municipalities and whether you can get a mentor or not depends on where you are living. Right now we arrange mentorships for newly arrived foreigners in Copenhagen, Hørsholm, Hillerød, Taarnby, Lyngby-Taarbæk, Rødovre, Ishøj-Vallensbæk, Fredensborg, Frederiksværk, Frederiksberg and Gentofte. Talk to your local job centre about the possibilities of getting a mentorship sponsored, we don't have the ressources to match anyone up directly and we don't have any say in who the jobcenters decide to sponsor. In the top right corner, you'll find a leaflet you can bring to your jobcenter, if you want to speak to them about the program and whether it's right for you.
